In the heart of Palestine, the Rami Zahi Khouri Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub for the creative students of Dar al-Kalima University is making waves as the first of its kind in the region. This innovative space is not just a physical location; it represents a movement to energize the local community and inspire young Palestinians.
The hub is designed to foster creativity and collaboration among startups, providing a professional environment where ideas can blossom. It aims to channel the ambition and talent of the younger generation, enabling them to transform their knowledge into viable opportunities.
Among the highlights of this initiative is the incredible potential of Palestinian youth. With a strong emphasis on creativity, the hub seeks to combat the high unemployment rates in the region by offering young people the chance to monetize their skills and eventually become employers themselves. The excitement surrounding this endeavor reflects a deep hope that resonates throughout the space.
Art and cultural events play a vital role in shaping the Palestinian identity. Noteworthy successes on the global stage include Palestinian artists gaining recognition in prestigious venues like the Museum of Modern Art at the Guggenheim, as well as accolades at international festivals such as Cannes.
The journey of these young talents highlights the resilience of the Palestinian spirit, with the saying "diamonds are made under pressure" ringing true. The hub serves as a mine for these diamonds, showcasing the depth of creativity that exists within what many perceive as a small, constrained community.
The hub features an impressive collection of contemporary art lent by the Nadia and Ghiath Sukhtian Foundation and organized by esteemed individuals like the talented teacher Mr. George Lama. This collection reflects the diversity and richness of Palestinian artistic expression, with particular emphasis on works emerging from Gaza. Despite the challenges faced by artists in the region, the hub aims to celebrate and promote their stories, showcasing the brilliance of those who continue to create despite adversity.
As the creative hub continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the strength, resilience, and creativity of Palestinian culture, offering a glimmer of hope and opportunity for the next generation. In doing so, it lays the groundwork for a brighter future built on the imagination and talent of its people.
Zahi Khouri
The hub was funded by Zahi Khouri, who serves as chair of the board of Dar al-Kalima University. A Palestinian-American born in Jaffa, Mr. Khouri is the founder and former chair and CEO of the National Beverage Company, the Coca-Cola exclusive licensee for Palestine. Mr. Khouri held a number of executive positions and board memberships in Palestine, the USA, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Business for Peace Award, which is determined by an independent committee of Nobel Prize Laureates in Peace and Economics. The award is given annually to a businessperson who promotes an interdependent relationship between peace and business. Nominees must serve as role models to society and their peers, be advocates for the importance of ethical and responsible business, and have the trust of stakeholders in the communities where their business is developed. The inspiration for the innovation and entrepreneurship hub came from Mr. Khouri’s commitment to promoting business and economic opportunities in Palestine. The hub is named for his deceased son, Rami.
